A competition for architects to design a new entrance to London has been launched with the opportunity to win a piece of Ralph Steadman artwork.
Open to architects and designers at all levels, GEZE – An Entrance to London, is already attracting dramatic, stunning and imaginative entries. Entrants can download GEZE’s illustrative background from www.gezecompetition.co.uk/, a dedicated website which also features an exclusive interview with Ralph Steadman.
Entries can be hand drawn, a collage, painted or comput
er generated using the background and will be judged by an expert panel purely on originality and inspiration. Managing director Andrew Hall said: “Entries can be humorous, outrageous, political or bizarre as long as it expresses your vision for London. We can’t wait to see how imaginative the UK’s architects can be when there’s no budget or brief to stick to. We’re delighted that world-renowned artist Ralph Steadman has agreed to support the competition and produce such a controversial image for our winner.”
"The GEZE - An Entrance to London competition is about the power of architectural imagery and the imagination of the profession. I hope that the competition will show the full range of techniques used by architects to represent their thinking, and also contribute to a debate about monumentality and arrival in the age of the icon building. We can't wait to publish the results and hope that some of the entries will compete with Ralph Steadman's dystopic vision." Kieran Long Editor of the Architects Journal
The competition in partnership with Architect’s Journal closes on 9 January 2009 and shortlisted architects will be invited to a prestigious awards lunch in February.
