ISG has commenced work on a £5.8 million project with client Ridge Medical Practice to build a new GP surgery, which is set to become the largest facility of its kind in Bradford. The Practice will replace an existing nearby surgery, which is now too small to meet demand, and will offer some of the latest and most sophisticated medical services in the UK.
Located within the Great Horton Conservation Area, the new medical centre will occupy a site adjacent to a late Victorian Grade II listed villa building, which will be fully restored as part of the project and transformed into a community facility. ISG will also renovate a further two mid-17th century listed cottages on the site, all under the supervision of English Heritage, with the scheme expected to act as a catalyst for further regeneration efforts within the area.
The new Practice, designed by architects Healthcare Design Partnership, has a reniform (kidney-shaped) profile, with curving walls a consistent theme throughout the new development. The three-storey, steel frame building will feature curtain walling, masonry elevations and cedar cladding to its façade. Facilities include a range of consulting and treatment rooms, minor surgery suites, and a large pharmacy. The building also houses an 80-seat flexible lecture theatre, library and study areas and office facilities for the Primary Care Trust (PCT).
To minimise life costs for the building and reduce its overall environmental impact, the new Practice features a range of sustainable technology. The building uses a natural ventilation system, under floor heating, roof mounted solar collectors to generate hot water and ISG will install a living green sedum roof. The project is scheduled for completion by summer 2009.
