Tamar Science Park opens for business

17/11/2008

The ten year relationship between LHC Architects and Tamar has been a fruitful one, through three Phases of the development. This has allowed the architects to use their skills in masterplanning, Side elevation of the Science Parklandscape architecture and architecture right from the inception of Phase 4. The result is a coherent and elegant urban cluster of buildings and public spaces which have been designed holistically to meet modern work demands.

Tamar Science Park has an important role to play in the repositioning and regeneration of Plymouth, and the economic development of the South West region as a whole. It is hub for research, knowledge and innovation, but also a model for state-of-the art, sustainable, highly-flexible working environments. LHC Architects has recently collected several national awards for other sustainable designs and this project amply demonstrates their expertise in this area.

Designed to minimise its impact on the environment and to achieve a Breeam environmental rating of ‘very good’, the new Tamar buildings incorporate green technologies such as a narrow footprint to facilitate cross-ventilation, passive cooling, rainwater harvesting and a sustainable drainage system.

Alex Lammie, Associate with LHC Architecture, said: “We’re very proud of this phase of Tamar Science Park. The project allowed us to push the boundaries of sustainable design in the South West, and the architecture of the finished buildings has been shaped by this environmental design approach. We look forward to seeing the Park grow and prosper.”
